Over the past couple of weeks I received a March 1952 Galaxy with “The Year of the Jackpot,” plus the February,March, and April 1956 issues of Astounding Science Fiction, in which are serialized Double Star.

​The art—especially the Kelly Freas for Double Star—is lovely.  All-up I had 23 scans to do, both easy-peasy covers plus significantly trickier interiors, but at last all are done, and all are posted; “The Year of the Jackpot” art is at “Pulp Magazines,” while the art from Double Star is at “Serialized Novels.”

I was in Chicago for a few days, during which my mail brought some nice old magazines of Heinlein.  For starters, I received three issues of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction: the first installment of Have Space Suit--Will Travel in August 1958 with a beautifully detailed and plot-correct cover by Ed Emshwiller, an installment of The Door Into Summer from December 1956 with Kelly Freas cover, and the August 1957 issue with “The Menace from Earth” under a cover from someone named Barry Waldman.

In addition, I received two hard-to-find pulps with less-famous Heinlein stories: “Columbus Was a Dope” in the May 1947 issue of a Startling Stories splashily covered by the inimitable Earle Bergey, and the light fantasy tale “Our Fair City” in the May 1949 Weird Tales.

Then, as long as I was in a big city, I figured I'd poke around a couple of bookstores to see if I could find any Heinlein I didn‘t already have.  Indeed I could: hardcovers of To Sail Beyond the Sunset and Requiem, which I had had only in paperbacks, plus more modern Glory Road and Red Planet.  The prices were decent, so I picked ‘em up.

At last all are scanned, and all are posted to my Heinlein Cover Art galleries.

It had been...well, a few days, I guess, since I went to Curious, so I stopped in again.  Really, I was just looking for a couple of Bradbury paperbacks that would be of use for my current project for Salem.  Since they weren’t there, I figured I’d check into the basement...where I finally found the fourth, and final, installment Citizen of the Galazy published in Astounding in 1957.

Therefore, I scanned the cover by Kelly Freas plus the six interior pen-and-ink drawings by van Dongen, and all are posted to my “Serializations” page.

Well, I don’t usually post cover art in single-book doses, but I happened to pick up a nice piece at The Reading Place in Charlotte, MI, today, and I simply couldn’t resist...

At left is a copy of Have Space Suit—Will Travel published by Atheneum, presumably in the mid-1990s.  The packaging is a bit of a puzzle, really: the only copyright inside is the original 1958, but while the lettering of the title suggested a rather recent printing, the lack of barcode anywhere on the piece almost made me think pre-1980s.  A closer look at Freas’s signature, however, clearly says ’94, so it’s 10 or 15 years newer than I thought.

Is this illustration as scrupulous to the text as, say, a Darrell K. Sweet or an Ed Emshwiller?  No—Kip looks older than 18, the Mother Thing is not serene and enigmatic enough (no one can beat Sweet's interpretation!), and Peewee appears a noticeable number of years past 11...  Still it is colorful and lovely in its own way, and it is a Freas, so I am glad to add it to my collection.  I hope you may enjoy it, too.
